Mail Server Options

Email2DB Enterprise Edition includes a built-in mail server. This enables email messages to be received directly by the Email2DB server from any email client. Emails received via the built-in mail server are processed immediately for the best possible performance.

The Email2DB Mail Server will also relay outgoing emails (with the required anti-relaying security) allowing it to be used like any other mail server.

To configure the Mail Server choose File..Options and then select the Mail Server tab:

To enable the built-in mail server click the Enable The Email2DB Built-In Mail Server option.

Bind To IP Address

Select the IP address that the mail server should listen on, or select ALL for all IP addresses. This option only needs to be used if your PC has multiple network interfaces and you are already running a mail server on one of them.

Listen On Ports

SMTP

This defaults to port 25, which is the standard for mail servers. If you change it, you must ensure that email clients use the correct port.

POP3

The Email2DB mail server includes a POP3 server that enables email clients to view email messages sent to the server. The default port for POP3 is 110 and normally does not need to be changed.

Mail Server Host Name

This specifies the name of the mail server. It must not be empty. It is used by the mail server when it communicates with clients or introduces itself to other mail servers. Typically it would be mail.yourdomain.com. If the mail server will only be used internally within your own network (and not be accessible from the Internet) then any text can be used.

Allow Relay From

The Email2DB mail server can also be used to relay outgoing emails. This enables it to be used just like any other mail server.  The Allow Relay From entry holds a list of IP addresses (separated by semi-colons) that the mail server will allow email to be relayed from. The entry defaults to all Internal LAN IP address. This means that anyone on your LAN can use the mail server to relay - but external IP addresses will not be allowed. This ensures that the mail server is not an 'open relay'. You can use wild cards in this entry.

DNS Server

If the Email2DB mail server will be used to send outgoing emails you must specify the DNS server to use. Email2DB will lookup the MX (mail exchange) records for external domains using the DNS server specified. This entry defaults to the DNS server specified on your default network connection settings.

Require Authentication

Enable this option if you want email clients to specify a valid user name/password when they connect to send email or to retrieve email via the POP3 server.

POP3 Clients

The Email2DB Server includes a POP3 server. This enables any email client to be used to retrieve email messages processed by Email2DB.

When Email2DB processes email messages (either received directly via the mail server, or retrieved from other sources - POP3, IMAP, Outlook) it stores the processed email in its own 'Checked Messages' database. This prevents the same email from being checked twice and provides a convenient method of backing up emails. If the Email2DB built-in mail server is enabled, then any email client can retrieve email messages from this database using the POP3 protocol.

Note: This option only works if the a full copy of the email is stored in the Email2DB database. See the Account Options for more information.

If Email clients choose to delete email from the server, then Email2DB will not actually delete the message from its database. Instead it simply flags the message as being deleted by the POP3 client, thus making it invisible when the client next connects.

POP3 clients use the User Name/Password specified on the Account - Direct Send settings. So, when a POP3 client connects they will retrieve emails that have been processed for that account only.
